Journalist Metin Cihan has revealed that Saban Vatan, who blamed political figures for the suspicious death of his daughter, was kept in a mental hospital following complaints filed by Eynesil Mayor Coskun Somuncuoglu and Nurettin Canikli, a senior AK Party (AKP) deputy and former minister of defense.
On April 12, 2018, 11-year-old Rabia Naz Vatan was found dead in front of her house in Eynesil, a town in the northern Turkish province of Giresun.
Although police declared her death a suicide, the girl’s father, Vatan, believes his daughter was hit by a car driven by relatives of the Eynesil mayor and that the accident was covered up by authorities, including AKP’s Canikli.
A Turkish court ruled, without a committee report, to send Vatan to the Samsun Psychiatric Hospital to be kept under supervision for three weeks in order to determine whether he has a mental illness, after being briefly detained over his brother’s complaint following the death of Rabia Naz.
Cihan has revealed that Vatan was hospitalized after Somuncuoglu and Canikli
filed complaints against him. Although the father continues to seek justice for Rabia Naz, her death remains suspicious.
