Turkey’s Defence Ministry announced that one Turkish soldier was killed and another was wounded in a mortar attack in northwestern Syria on Sunday.
The attack was carried out by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the Afrin region and Turkey’s military launched retaliatory fire, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
A photo of Mustafa Ergen, the Turkish soldier who was killed in the attack, was published by the ministry on its Twitter account.
“We offer our condolences to the martyr’s family, the Turkish Armed Forces, and our nation,” the ministry said.
Ankara deems the YPG a terrorist group and an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), though both groups say they are independent of each other.
PKK has waged an insurgency against Turkey, initially seeking independence and lately autonomy for the Kurdish minority in the country since 1984.
The YPG militia has been a key ally of the United States in its fight against Islamic State in Syria.
