Eight opposition politicians, including a mayoral candidate, detained by Turkish police days before local elections

Turkish police have detained eight opposition politicians, including a mayoral candidate, on a charge of “disseminating terror propaganda” charge through social media.

Turkish media outlets reported the detentions happened in the western province of Balikesir. The mayoral co-candidate is Yurdanur Guven from the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP).

As part of the investigation launched by the Balikesir Prosecutor’s Office, custody orders have been issued for eight opposition HDP officials.

They were detained by counter-terrorism teams of Balikesir police department. During the raids to suspects’ houses in the early morning, the police also seized digital devices.

Similarly, the HDP mayoral candidate in the southeastern province of Batman and two district chairs in Istanbul were detained over terror charges in January.

The Turkish government accuses HDP of having links with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its Western allies, has waged an insurgency against Turkey, seeking initially independence and lately autonomy for the Kurdish minority in the country since the early 1980s, leaving behind more than 40,000 casualties.
