Turkey’ judicial board reshuffles more than 3,700 judges and prosecutors

Turkey’s Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSK) has reshuffled 3,722 judges and prosecutors’ places of duty, according to a news report by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) on Friday.

The First Chamber of the HSK announced the reassignments through a decree published on its website on Friday.

AA reported that chief public prosecutors of some 20 provinces that include Diyarbakir, Samsun and Izmir were reappointed in line with the decree.

Need-based appointments of new judges and prosecutors were also made in the regional courts of justice in Van, Diyarbakir, Kayseri, and Trabzon provinces.

According to an Ihlas News Agency (IHA) report on Friday, Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor Kamil Erkut Gure was reappointed as the chief public prosecutor of Izmir and Samsun’s chief public prosecutor Ahmet Yavuz was reappointed to the same position in Diyarbakir.

The HSK said that a list of all the reshuffled judges and prosecutors would be made available on the institution’s official website soon.

Prosecutor who detained teachers over football conflict moved

One of the prosecutors appointed by the HSK decree previously got 14 teachers briefly detained upon a scheduling conflict over a football match on a carpeted field, Gazete Duvar news portal reported on Friday.

An investigation was launched against the teachers after the prosecutor ordered their detention in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir’s Cermik district on February 27.

The prosecutor, who was appointed to the Diyarbakir Public Prosecutor’s Office with the latest decree of HSK, was criticized by Turkey’s Education Minister Ziya Selcuk after the incident.

“The incident targeting our teachers in Cermik has saddened us. The necessary procedures have been launched by our Justice Ministry. It is our wish that such an incident does not happen again,” Selcuk said on his official Twitter account.

Education Ministry Deputy Minister Mustafa Safran argued that teachers are not stepchildren of Turkey nor are they without protection.

“The detention of 14 teachers in Diyarbakir’s Cermik district has caused us much distress,” he added in a tweet.
