Former university boss and supporters storm university

Halic University’s rectorate was stormed on by its former boss Mansur Topcuoglu and some of his supporters on Friday.

Topcuoglu and his approximately 30 supporters were later detained by police, T24 online news portal reported.

The group reportedly managed to reach the rectorate office, overwhelming the security officers that had been stationed there by Istanbul University, which currently administers Halic University.

A short while later the police arrived at the scene and detained them.

Accompanied by the police, the detainees were taken for a mandatory health check at the hospital before taken to the police station for questioning.

On May 13, 2016, Turkey’s Higher Education Board (YOK) stripped Topcuoglu of his duties at the university, replacing him with an appointed administrator. Since then, the board of Istanbul University has become responsible for the management of Halic.

The YOK fired Topcuoglu from his post and appointed a trustee because according to them there was mismanagement at the university.
