Members of Turkey’s ruling AK Party (AKP) attacked the brother of a mayoral candidate of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) – AKP’s electoral ally for the upcoming local elections – on Sunday, news portal Oda TV reported on Monday.
AKP and MHP formed the People’s Alliance, an electoral coalition to rival the Nation Alliance, which is formed by the main opposition; the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the nationalist opposition Good Party (lYI Party) and Islamist Felicity Party (SP), in the local elections that will take place on March 31.
The attack took place around 10.30 pm on Sunday, when Hasan Huseyin Kosker, the MHP’s mayoral candidate for Kirsehir’s Mucur district, was visiting a municipal council member of MHP. Turkish media reported that Hulusi Kosker, the brother of Hasan Huseyin Kosker, was ambushed when he was on his way to join his brother.
A group of between 50 and 60 AKP members, who arrived at the scene in 15 vehicles, attacked Hulusi Kosker, mistaking him for his brother, Oda TV reported Kosker as saying on Monday. Kosker received multiple bone fractures to his body after being battered by AKP members.
Turkish media also reported that four gunshots were heard during the attack.
Hulusi Kosker said that AKP members engage in this kind of action to create pressure on other parties’ candidates on the eve of the local elections.
“There is no democratic environment [in Turkey], there’s only pressure. They [AKP members] are trying to prevent candidates [of other parties] from walking freely on the streets and communicating with other people,” Kosker told Oda TV on Monday.
Turkish police have detained 11 people for orchestrating the attack on the MHP mayoral candidate’s brother.
