The Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK) has suspended diplomas of thousands of graduates that are or are currently studying at universities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to which they came from Turkish universities through lateral transfer, independent online news outlet Gazete Duvar reported on Friday.
The YOK’s move which came without notification and will have an effect retrospectively drew rebuff by graduates and current students who are expected to be around 100000 in total.
Among those, there are reportedly many actively working people in Turkey as architects, lawyers, doctors, judges and in many other fields who cannot see their diplomas on the YOK’s online system (YOKSIS).
According to a source from the YOK, they have been working on drafting the decision which would be published as soon as possible, Gazete Duvar reported.
The source said the graduates from TRNC universities will have to get equivalency certificates which certify the education that has been taken under the authority are equivalent to the education in Turkey.
One cannot enroll in a university in Turkey without the certificate of equivalence.
Some lawyers claimed that YOK’s new decision cannot be effective retrospectively, otherwise would be unlawful, adding that YOK can only initiate procedures for recognition of qualifications of foreign higher education diplomas and degrees
