The shocking incident where 49 people were killed and some 20 others injured when shooters opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday prayers, has been described as “terrorist attack” by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Police are reviewing footage on Facebook, allegedly a live broadcast of the attack taken by a gunman, in which he denounces immigrants.
One man in his late 20s was charged with murder and will appear in court tomorrow, police said.
“This is one of the darkest days in New Zealand’s history,” said Ardern, condemning the attack and saying that the country has been placed on its highest security alert level. He announced that four people have been detained, including three men and one woman with extremist views, but who had not been on the police watchlist.
The visiting Bangladesh cricket team’s coach told Reuters that the team members were about to arrive at one of the mosques just minutes before the attack but are all safe.
