Turkish survivor of New Zealand mosque attack: We played dead but the gunman shot us when he realized we were still alive

Mustafa Boztas, a Turkish survivor of the mass shooting that took place in New Zealand on Friday, said he and few others pretended to be dead during the attack but the gunman fired bullets at them when he realized they were still alive.

At least one gunman killed 49 people and injured more than 20 others at two mosques in New Zealand’s Christchurch city in the country’s worst ever mass shooting on Friday.

Speaking to Haberturk daily on Friday, Boztas said that the gunman who mowed down the Masjid Al Noor mosque shot him and a few others near him when he realized that they were playing dead.

Boztas said he was listening to the sermon inside the mosque when he heard gunshots.

“We all raced to the corner of the room, but we couldn’t get away,” Boztas said.

“A few of us pretended to be dead, but the gunman fired bullets at us once he found out we were faking it,” the survivor explained.

Boztas, who managed to get away through the mosque’s window, is being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Friday that three Turkish citizens were wounded in the New Zealand mosque attack, but no fatalities.

Erdogan and his government condemn the deadly attacks in New Zealand after a historical, worst-ever mass shooting
