One of two alleged UAE spies commits suicide in Turkish prison

A man, who was arrested by Turkish authorities on suspicion of illegally gathering intelligence for the United Arab Emirates, allegedly committed suicide in the Silivri Prison, Haberturk reported early on Monday.

On April 19, two men were detained in a joint operation by the Turkish police and intelligence service (MIT) on charges of international, political and military espionage. One of the men is allegedly linked to last year’s murder of Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, Reuters reported, refusing to identify its source who is apparently a senior Turkish official.

The two men reportedly confessed during police questioning to conducting espionage, as an encrypted computer was seized by the Turkish officials in a hidden compartment in a room, which was believed to be a spy ring’s base in Istanbul.

The Reuters’ source added that Turkey had been monitoring the man for six months and was investigating whether his arrival in Turkey in October 2018, days after the Khashoggi murder, was related to the killing.

According to findings so far, there has been a lot of contact by the suspects in Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul, and Diyarbakir.

Haberturk’s report has not provided any details on whether the man who allegedly took his life is, in fact, the suspect of the Khashoggi murder.

Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post and critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed and dismembered by a group of Saudi operatives at the Saudi consulate on October 2, 2018, in Istanbul.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate to collect documents for his planned wedding.

At the time, Khashoggi was living in the United States, resisting pressure from Riyadh to return home after having written critically about the Saudi government and Crown Prince Salman.

Saudi officials denied the killing at first but later conceded, claiming that the murder was unintentional but was carried out by a rogue team with the intention of taking Khashoggi back to Riyadh.
