
A flag symbolizing the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) hanging on a minaret of a mosque in Aydın drew a reaction from locals on Sunday, according to Arti Gercek news portal.
The AKP flag on the minaret of the mosque in Aydin’s Bozdogan district caused a reaction from the locals, according to a news report on Aydin’s local news portal Gunaydin.
People of Haydere neighborhood, where the mosque is located in the Bozdogan district, protested the political symbol being hung on a place of worship, and called on the district’s mufti to remove the flag.
AKP’s Bozdogan district stepped into action after the locals’ reaction and removed the flag, replacing it with a Turkish flag.
Bozdogan district’s head, Kemal Bozoglu, made a statement about the incident, claiming that a citizen had hung the flag unbeknown to the party’s district office.
“We stepped in after we realized the situation. Our mosques and military posts are not suitable places for politics,” Bozdogan added.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the ruling AK Party he founded have roots in political Islam and have been criticized for exploiting religion for political gain.
