Athens not impressed by Erdogan’s comments made at an election rally in Izmir

Athens has warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to exploit foreign policy issues for domestic ends.

It further said he must not use narratives containing offensive words to Turkey’s neighbor.

The Greek Foreign Ministry issued a statement after Erdogan made comments at a local elections rally in Izmir on March 17.

The Ministry’s short statement reads: “Greece is not going to be swept away in the instrumentalization of foreign policy to serve domestic political expediencies or use history with terms that are offensive to neighboring countries.

“Such unacceptable references undermine the trust we hope to build between our countries and are not in line with the European perspective the Turkish leadership claims to support.”

In the rally, depicting the final days of the Turkish War of Independence, Erdogan hailed Izmir as “the city who pours giaours into the sea and cares for the destitute.” The Greek side, on the other hand, sees the referred people as “the Greeks who drowned while trying to flee a fire set by Turks in the port.”
