RTUK’s chairman resigns from an organisation known for controversial decisions, and it’s hate of a critical press

The chairman of a controversial Turkish media watchdog has resigned, citing family health concerns as the key driving decision.

İlhan Yerlikaya, chairman of the lousy and controversial Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) stepped down from an organisation better known for imposing unreasonable fines and handing out controversial decisions to media organisations, doing this arbitrarily.

Many televisions and media organisations have been barred from broadcasting by the pro-government watchdog RTUK, doing this through fines. The organisation has been accused of being highly politicised, making it one of the most criticised state-run organs in Turkey.

Yerlikaya employed loyalists from his home province

Yerlikaya has been criticised for his pro-government attitudes and his employment policy, where he was accused of filling vacancies with loyalist cadres coming from his home province of Konya.  Konya is a central Turkish province, about 633 km east of İstanbul.

Cancelling on the guidance of government

Turkey’s broadcasting watchdog had canceled many licenses of at least 24 radio and television stations, allegedly for having links with the Gulen movement dubbed as FETO by the government after the coup attempt. Fethullah Gulen is accused of staging the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, however, he denies the accusations.
