Ex-police officer lashes court as he is sentenced to over 126 years in jail

A policeman has been sentenced to 126 years in jail after accusations of links to the Gulen movement were levelled against him.

İbrahim Güneş, who was dismissed from the force, was following the hearing of the case. The case has come to be known as Gülenist Movement/Parallel State Organisation (FETÖ/PYD) Illegal Wiretapping of 70 dignitaries.

Among the wire-taped was also Haydar Meriç, a journalist, whose body was found in the sea.

Güneş attended the trial over SEGBİS (an audiovisual system) and it was held in the 2nd Criminal Court of Kırklareli (a Turkish province, neighbouring Bulgaria, in the European part of Turkey about 211,6 km west of Istanbul.

The hearing was attended by both Güneş’ lawyers and treasurer.  Before the charges were read out, the public prosecutor gave an opinion in relation to the accusations.

Güneş: “Don’t play with the law like a toy”, I don’t wait for any mercy from none of you

During the trial, the prosecutor demanded Güneş get harsh punishment because of seriously constituted offences, which are  “attempting the abolishment of the government of the Turkish Republic”, “violating of home immunity”, “illegal wiretapping of confidential speech of individuals”, “recording personal data illegally” and “being a member of an armed terror organization”.

Güneş retorted: “Don’t play with the law like a toy. I don’t want any mercy from any of you. My God will not separate me from my beloved ones. Very good days are waiting for us.”

Güneş was speaking after the judges asked him to say his last words.

More than 126 years of imprisonment

After the court recess, the convened judges sentenced Güneş to 126 years, nine months and nineteen days in prison based on all the above charges.

Alleged illegal wiretaps by Gülenist movement

Gülenist Movement is dubbed as FETÖ, which is accused of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, through its followers in the military. There have been similar allegations against the organisation in the past. Allegedly, using its followers in the law enforcement, the group wiretapped phone conversations of hundreds of people according to prosecutors and used them for blackmail and other purposes.
