Three killed when landing Turkish plane breaks in three

A Turkish passenger airliner skidded off the runway while landing at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport and broke into three parts, killing three and injuring 179, Turkish media outlets reported on Wednesday.

The Pegasus Airlines plane crash took place at about 6:30 p.m. local time, and according to Turkey’s transport minister Mehmet Cahit Turhan, a rough landing was to blame for the crash.

The two pilots injured in the crash are in a critical condition, according to the T24 news portal.

The plane, flight number PC2193, was flying from the western city of Izmir with 177 passengers and six crew members on board.

Pegasus Airlines is a Turkish low-cost carrier.

Video footage shared on social media showed the plane overrunning the runway. The plane later caught fire but was quickly extinguished.

Prosecutors in Ankara have launched an investigation into the incident.

The airport was shut down to air traffic following the incident, with inbound flights being diverted to the Istanbul Airport.

According to Guntay Simsek, a columnist at daily Haberturk, this was the third accident of Boeing 737 belonging to the same company within the past two years.

The previous incident took place on January 7 in the same manner at the same airport. No casualties and injuries were recorded during the earlier incidents.
