Body of Khashoggi may have been burned: Police report

An Istanbul Police Department report revealed that, after being killed and dismembered, the body of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi might have been burned in the Saudi Consulate’s gas and wood floor furnace.

Citing an annual report by Istanbul Police on Thursday, Anadolu Agency said that the Saudi Consulate Building in İstanbul has two water-wells and a gas and wood floor furnace that can reach over 1000 degrees, which would destroy all DNA traces. Police believe that information obtained in the investigation strongly indicates that the dismembered remains of Khashoggi were burned.

Khashoggi’s fiancée could have been a second victim

In the report, it was also stated that the Istanbul Police department believes Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi’s fiancée, could have been a second victim in the murder had she entered the Saudi consulate with Khashoggi, Anadolu reported.

Khashoggi’s killers were most likely not informed that his fiancée, Cengiz, was waiting for him outside the Saudi Consulate where he was killed on October 2. It was Cengiz who alerted Turkish authorities about his disappearance.

Turkey has called for an international inquiry.

Contradicting reports over Khashoggi murder

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was killed and dismembered by a group of Saudi operatives shortly after he entered the country’s consulate in Istanbul on October 2. He had written critically about Saudi Arabia’s crown prince.

In explanation of Khashoggi’s disappearance, Saudi officials gave contradicting narratives seeking to blame his death on a botched rendition operation carried out by rogue agents, but eventually acknowledged that he was murdered in the diplomatic building. They admitted that he had been killed and his body dismembered when negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed.

The explanation has been firmly rejected outside the Kingdom as pressure has mounted for Crown Prince bin Salman, whom many believe had to sign off Khashoggi’s killing, to be held to account.
