Celebrated annually on August 30, the Victory Day, also known as the Armed Forces Day, is dedicated to Turkey’s armed forces who succeeded in the Great Offensive under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, against occupying Greek forces.
Accompanied by political leaders, senior officials of state institutions and the judiciary, and the top brass of the Turkish military, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Friday honored Ataturk during the ceremony at the Anıtkabir, his mausoleum in Ankara.
Erdogan placed a wreath on the grave of Ataturk, who died 16 years after the critical war, and wished divine mercy upon those who lost their lives in the battle.
“We are determined to protect the republic, which is built upon the sacrifice of our revered martyrs and something you [Ataturk] entrusted to us, with our lives. … No force will succeed in preventing us from reaching our 2023 goals,” the president wrote in a message on Anıtkabir’s guestbook, a custom for the country’s leaders every Victory Day.
In the message, Erdogan referred to a set of developmental goals of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) government plans to accomplish by the centenary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey.
Thousands of visitors also placed wreaths and visited the museum inside Anitkabir, following the formal ceremony.
The day was also celebrated by Turkey’s diplomatic missions around the world, the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) reported on Friday.
On August 29, senior officials from the ruling government, as well as diplomats and staff from Turkish institutions operating in Jordan attended a reception in the capital Amman held by the country’s Turkish embassy.
Another reception was held in Sudan with the attendance of foreign dignitaries, embassy staff and representatives of various organizations, AA said.
