Almost 2 000 medical devices were inspected and thousands of website that sell unsafe ones were blocked through 2018 in Turkey.
This was announced by Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Friday.
“One thousand and forty-nine medical devices were inspected in the last year and 6 259 websites that promote and trade these items were blocked,” Koca shared the details on his Twitter account.
“The ministry reported that twenty-four unsafe products and 132 products were found not to meet technical regulations,” Koca said.
Companies dealing with irregular items were fined up to 2.676.526 Turkish Lira ($ 499.644).
The minister further said the distribution of these products were banned, and prohibited medical items were collected and destroyed during operations.
Koca, through Twitter, said “market inspections related to all kinds of illegal products that put the citizen’s health at risk by showing unrealistic health results, the companies seek unfair benefit are continuing without slowing down.”
Koca explained that in 2018, 1 380 cosmetic products were inspected and 64 of them were deemed as unreliable and 579 products were listed as unsuitable. Besides these items, 746 medical products were categorised as false, illegal and imitations. The minister issue 2.630.054 Turkish Lira ($ 491, 119) fines in relation to items in these categories.
These products include children’s cosmetics, decorative cosmetics, eye makeup products, personal cleaning and care products (especially hotel cosmetics), shaving products and men’s cosmetics (cream, foam, lotion, etc.), shower and bath products (salts, foam, oils, gels, etc.) The list was released by Koca, who said these were found to be fakes.
There was also an investigation into the promotion and sales of all these fake products, done via the Internet and TV in violation of health legislation. In this regard, in the last year, 6 259 websites were blocked and 8.800.000 Lira fines were imposed on online companies.
