Claims of unpaid workers in broadcast media are being made with payments of salaries only assured for TV entities continue to be embedded with the ruling AKP.
The Breathe Down Bosses’ Neck Network (BBDN) formed recently has called on Turkey’s Communist Party to defend workers’ right. It’s also claimed Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), the national broadcaster company, is failing to pay the salaries of the set of the famous TV Series Resurrection: Ertugrul.
A set worker, who wants to remain anonymous due to fear of being fired or lose the job, said: “Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addresses the nation in the evening. The next morning propaganda is pushed as his words are added to the script.”
This comes hot on the heels of a fight between Turkey’s largest cinema halls owner Mars Group’s fight with filmmakers. Turkish filmmakers also announced they would stop broadcasting for three weeks if payments are not received from TV channels.
There has been a stand-off of two sides, box office movie bosses and cinema operators on one side, while TV series producers and TV channels’ owners on the opposite side.
The crisis that has hit the sector see the constant failure to pay workers as producers don’t get due payments. Claims made by BDBN are that some workers have been forced to take up to three weeks of unpaid leave.
HaberSol, Turkey’s leftist news portal, has claimed only TRT never go off air as it acts as AKP’s mouthpiece, failing to be an independent public broadcaster, as stipulated by the Constitution.
Fuat Oktay, the country’s Deputy President, recently refused to give opposition parties financial figures allocated to TRT after a Parliamentary question was asked, claiming “they are a business secret.”
Various an anonymous set members, who did not want to share their names for fear, of Ertugrul told HaberSol AKP leaders to watch Ertugrul’s production tapes before going on air.
“The Resurrection Ertugrul is funded by the state. I observed that when Erdogan addresses the nation in the evening, the next day Engin Altan Düzyatan, who plays the “eponymous hero” uses Erdogan’s words series.” said one set worker.
The pathetic working environment for the set and no AKP criticism
The worker also said when they “work in the forest, there is no team to warm up us in the cold weather. We collect woods and warm ourselves. We smell bad and breathe smoke. Probably we will face many health problems in the near future.”
There is constant pressure from the producers not to criticise AKP. “We are warned not to follow each other on social media. A camera person got fired for taking photos in the set and had a heart attack and died,” the set labourer says.
Another set labourer says that the Ertugrul’s set team worked continuous twenty days without taking breaks. The big bosses don’t want to be asked about taking breaks and treat most set members badly.
“Small kids act under the coal smoke during for eight to nine hours. They are not allowed to have fresh air. Producers treat main cast member nicely but no one cares, they got injured in the set but were forced to continue. TRT doesn’t pay the salaries on time. I am still not paid after six episodes. Set workers have no money even for transport.”
There was also, its claimed, a case of child abuse as a child was hit several times to make him cry, to make up a scene.

No care for the environment by TRT
“We fire truck tyres in the battle scenes to give smoke effects as the TRT doesn’t buy a smoke machine. I heard that in other TV series of the TRT also burn truck tyres. During the day we burn four hundred tyres. The entire set breathes the smoke. Not only our health, but we harm the environment also. Villagers complained but the soldiers came to defend TRT and had a cup of tea and left,” the set workers claimed.
Set workers also spoke of ridiculous working hours don’t adhere to the hours stipulated by Labour Law. We don’t eat anything from 8 am to 5 pm. It takes two hours to get home. Drivers sleep only two to three hours a day.
So far the managers at TRT and producers of the Ertugrul TV serial have not responded to the allegations.
Second after the US
Several Turkish TV series make about $350 million in foreign syndication, coming second after the US.
From the US to Russia, the Balkans, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America, more than 70 countries enjoy Turkish TV serials. “Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne?” (What is Fatmagül’s Fault), “Ezel,” and “Kara Sevda” “Gönülçelen” (“Becoming a Lady”), “Unutulmaz,” (“Unforgettable”), “Muhteşem Yüzyıl” (The Magnificent Century), “Aşk-ı Memnu” (Forbidden Love), “Sıla,” “Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman Ki” (Time Goes By), “Gümüş” (Noor), “Adını Feriha Koydum” (I Named Her Feriha), “Aşk ve Ceza” (Love and Punishment) and “Ezel.”, “Binbir Gece” (A Thousand and One Nights) are some of the most famous Turkish TV series exported to many countries in the last fifteen years.
Who is BBDN
Breathe Down Bosses Neck Network (BBDN) was formed recently upon the call of Turkey’s Communist Party to defend workers’ rights.
This came after Turkey’s Flormar, Cargill, Ani Tour companies and Istanbul New Airport violated the workers’ rights. BBDN exposes companies that fail to salaries, fire workers through publishing news articles about the companies and organising solidarity meetings among workers.
The Communist Party announced: “Against the crisis and its profiteers – the capitalists, we have launched BBDN, a network for solidarity, communication and struggle among workers.
