UN investigator for Khashoggi’s case “disappointed” over lack of information from Turkish authorities

Agnes Callamard, the UN investigator leading the international probe into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, told the reporters in Istanbul on Thursday that she is disappointed with the lack of cooperation on sharing related information from Turkish authorities.

Callamard, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary killings, came to Turkey for a week-long visit as part of the Khashoggi probe where she conducts with a team of experts.

On Tuesday, the rapporteur visited the consulate in Istanbul but did not enter the place, since Saudi authorities have not yet granted her access to the premises.

Callamard met with Istanbul’s Chief Prosecutor, Irfan Fidan, on Tuesday, a day after she held talks with Turkish Foreign and Justice Ministers.

“We have had good meetings here, but we are still a bit disappointed that we were not able to get all the information we requested related to the investigation,” said Callamard to the reporters, following a closed-door meeting with Hatice Cengiz, the fiance of the slain journalist.

“We are still hopeful that the authorities will be able to deliver on their commitment and hand over to us some of the information related to a police investigation,” she added.

The rapporteur said that she will be finishing her final report by the late May and would present it to the UN’s Human Rights Council in June.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who criticised Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed on October 2 inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where he had gone to collect documents for his planned wedding.

US and Turkish officials believe that Khashoggi’s murder was ordered by the highest rank of the Saudi regime, however, the kingdom has strictly denied the allegations and opposed that crown prince Muhammed bin Salman was involved.
