Venezuela’s Guaido reserves US military support as last resort

Speaking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday, Venezuela’s self-declared interim president Juan Guaido said that the Venezuelan people want to oust President Nicolas Maduro with “whatever pressure is necessary,” refusing to rule out, accepting US military support.

“Here in Venezuela, we are doing everything we can to put pressure, so that we don’t have to come to a scenario that no one would wish to have,” Guaido replied when asked by Amanpour whether he would accept US military support.

The statement comes after rumours revolving  around on a potential US military intervention in Venezuela citing the photographed notepad of the White House national security advisor John Bolton, reading “5 000 troops to Colombia.”

White House spokesman, Sarah Sanders, said all options, including military intervention, are on the table regarding the situation in Venezuela.

Bolton, on Friday, speaking to a US radio channel, said that a US military intervention is not imminent but emphasised the stance of the US government keeping all options on the table.

“Acts of Intimidation Will be Accounted For”

Earlier on Thursday, Guaido conveyed during a speech that the police’s special action force, came to his house to interview his wife, Fabiana Rosales.

“The special police is at my house, asking for Fabiana. At this moment the dictatorship believes that it will intimidate us,” said Guaido defying the move.

“There will be consequences for those engaged in such acts of intimidation, they will be held accountable and they will be missing this unique opportunity to move on,” said a senior US official to the reporters, urging Venezuelan troops to accept Guaido’s offer of amnesty if they backed his claim.

Venezuela’s Gold Reserves Being Liquidated

After the announcement of sanctions against Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, PdVSA, the US is heavily putting pressure on Venezuela urging influential players in the business world to stay away from doing business with Nicolas Maduro’s government.

The latest example came on Friday, with US Secretary of Treasury announcing that the foreigners dealing Venezuelan oil using the financial system of the US should be ready to cease doing so until April 28.

Grappling with international pressure, Maduro is trying to liquidate the central bank gold reserves in exchange for Euros in cash, according to a Reuters report quoting a senior official anonymously.

The plan to sell 29 tonnes of gold held in Caracas to the United Arab Emirates by February in order to acquire cash for imports of basic goods began with a shipment on January 26 of 3 tonnes, according to the source of Reuters.
