Turk-Is report paints a doom picture of hunger as Turks struggle to keep up

POVERTY levels continue to rise in Turkey as more citizens face hardships and are failing to live within the bread line.

The Confederation of Labour Unions of Turkey (Turk-Is) has announced that in January the poverty line reached 6,543 Turkish Lira ($1261) while the hunger threshold is 2009 TL ($387). The cost of living for an unmarried employee without a child is 2.451,97 TL, per month.

According to the Turk-is report, monthly food expenditures increased by 3.48 % and annually 24,34 % in January 2019.

The report’s focus in on January and it states only for food,  an expenses amount of an extra 393,17 TL is needed this year, while living expenses generally have increased by 220 TL compared to last month.

Vegetables are also pricey

The report also revealed the average price of fresh vegetables and fruits has increased.

On an average vegetable kilogram price of 25,90%, compared to the previous month, there is an increase of 7 pounds.

The report also indicates that vegetables over 10 TL such as beans, eggplants, pepper, have not been taken into consideration.
