Turkey detains four medical personnel for treating wounded PKK militants

A Turkish medical doctor and three male nurses have been detained for having treated injured members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in southeastern Sirnak, Diken news portal reported on Friday.

The treatment was reportedly offered to those PKK members who were injured during clashes with  Turkish security forces in Sirnak’s Cizre district during the period of curfews in 2015 and 2016.

The doctor N.S and the nurses with the initials S.E, A.K, and A.T, who were working at a private hospital at the time, were detained by the counterterrorism (TEM) police as part of an investigation carried out by the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspects are currently being questioned in the Cizre police department, Diken said on Friday.

Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States, the PKK has waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkey’s southeast since 1984.

After a two and a half-year peace process between the outlawed PKK and the Turkish security forces, Ankara launched a wide-scale operation.

PKK militants dug trenches to fend off Turkish forces in a number of mainly Kurdish populated districts in 2015.
