Three Turkish soldiers were killed and another wounded during an air-backed anti-terror operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern district of Silopi of Turkey’s Sirnak province, the provincial governor’s office announced on Wednesday.
Two PKK militants had been reportedly “neutralized”, a term commonly used by the Turkish authorities to refer to killed, wounded or captured PKK members.
The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) launched an operation to protect the workers of the state-run Turkey Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) working in the Kosreli village.
In a clash between troops of the Cakirsogut Gendarmerie Commando and the PKK militants, one soldier was killed and another three injured.
Two of the wounded soldiers later succumbed to their injuries in a hospital in the 23rd Infantry Division Command.
Fahrettin Altun, the communications director of the Turkish presidency, condemned the attack through his Twitter account.
“Our state will continue to make life unbearable for all terrorist organizations which attempt to attack our country. I wish mercy of Allah upon our heroes Muhammed Ferdi Guntekin, Mehmet Ucar and Ayhan Yanik who were martyred in the terrorist operation in Sirnak,” Altun said.
Counter-terrorism operations were continuing in the region, the governor’s office said in its statement.
On Sunday, the TSK launched an operation dubbed “Operation Kiran” against the PKK members in the three neighboring provinces of Sirnak, Hakkari, and Van, aiming to neutralize the PKK militants and destroy encampments and shelters in dozens of districts, villages, and valleys with 129 security force teams and 14 battalions.
The PKK launched an armed insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984, calling for an independent Kurdish state within the country.
